SPX 2025: New Developments in Guarantees of Origin Auctions
At the 20th anniversary of the SPX Autumn Conference, we presented upcoming innovations that will fundamentally transform the trading of guarantees of origin in Slovakia. We demonstrated how our technological solutions will elevate transparency, flexibility, and competition in the energy sector to a new level.
During a panel discussion focused on digital solutions in the energy industry, Robert Maier, Executive Director of the Development Division at SFÉRA, outlined the key benefits of the planned changes.
New Auction Model: more competition, greater transparency, better liquidity
Guarantees of origin play an increasingly important role in verifying the origin and sustainability of energy production. Their issuance and registration fall under the responsibility of OKTE, which also lists them on the XMtrade®/ZPE platform—developed and technologically supported by SFÉRA.
The upcoming innovations will bring significant improvements starting next year:
-
A new matching algorithm will open auctions to smaller producers and increase competition.
-
Multiple sellers will replace the current single-seller model, enhancing market liquidity.
-
The pay-as-clear mechanism will ensure a uniform marginal price and greater price transparency.
-
Monthly auctions will replace the current quarterly schedule, making the market more dynamic and active.
“Our platform for guarantees of origin auctions is flexible and ready to support new forms of trading. In the Czech market, auctions for multiple commodities are already being considered, and in addition to electricity, guarantees of origin for gas and heat are also planned,” said Robert Maier.
SFÉRA’s information system for issuing guarantees of origin is also used by OTE, the electricity and gas market operator in the Czech Republic. We are currently developing the auction mechanism and additional functionalities, with their launch planned for the first quarter of 2026.
We believe that our active participation in the panel discussion contributed to a constructive dialogue on the further development of the energy market. SFÉRA was a partner of the SPX Autumn Conference, whose 20th edition took place on December 4–5, 2025, at the Grand Hotel Permon**** in Podbanské, in the High Tatras.
At the SPX Autumn Conference, SFÉRA was represented by Michal Minárik, CEO; Robert Maier, Executive Director of the Development Division; and Patrik Rzavský, Development Division Analyst.
